Boone was one of the pioneer gastroenterologists in Jackson. He trained at Yale before setting up a private practice for many years, primarily at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital. During the last years of his practice, he returned to UMMC, where he provided valuable teaching, leadership and clinical care.

Boone graduated from UMMC and was chief resident in the Department of Medicine from 1967-69. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he went to Yale Medical School for his GI fellowship. During his time as a faculty member at UMMC, he also served as interim division director. Boone retired from the Department of Medicine in 2011.

A memorial service for Boone took place Jan. 30 at Fondren Presbyterian Church in Jackson.
